Integrating Diel Vertical Migrations of Bioluminescent Deep Scattering Layers Into Monitoring Programs

چکیده

The deep sea (i.e., >200 m depth) is a highly dynamic environment where benthic ecosystems are functionally and ecologically connected with the overlying water column surface. In aphotic sea, organisms rely on external signals to synchronize their biological clocks. Apart from responding cyclic hydrodynamic patterns periodic fluctuations of variables such as temperature, salinity, phytopigments, oxygen concentration, arrival migrators at depth 24-h basis (described Diel Vertical Migrations; DVMs), well-lit surface shallower waters, could represent major response solar-based synchronization between photic realms. addition triggering rhythmic behavioral responses species, DVMs supply food seafloor communities through active downward transport carbon nutrients. Bioluminescent species migrating scattering layers play not yet quantified (but likely important) role in benthopelagic coupling, raising need integrate efficient detection quantification bioluminescence into large-scale monitoring programs. Distribution and diel vertical movements of mesopelagic scattering layers in the Red Sea

The mesopelagic zone of the Red Sea represents an extreme environment due to low food concentrations, high temperatures and low oxygen waters. Nevertheless, a 38 kHz echosounder identified at least four distinct scattering layers during the daytime, of which the 2 deepest layers resided entirely within the mesopelagic zone. Two of the acoustic layers were found above a mesopelagic oxygen minimu...

Vertical Migrations of a Deep-Sea Fish and Its Prey

It has been speculated that some deep-sea fishes can display large vertical migrations and likely doing so to explore the full suite of benthopelagic food resources, especially the pelagic organisms of the deep scattering layer (DSL). This would help explain the success of fishes residing at seamounts and the increased biodiversity found in these features of the open ocean. We combined active p...

SHORT COMMUNICATION Understanding diel-vertical feeding migrations in zooplankton using bulk carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes

We used bulk stable isotope analysis (SIA) to examine diel feeding activity in two vertically migrating krill species, Thysanoessa gregaria and Euphausia similis, off eastern Australia. SIA indicated feeding by both species above the thermocline at night, potentially on both particulate organic matter and microzooplankton. Our results support the use of SIA to investigate vertical migration and...
